What happened in the Manchester Airports Group (MAG) data breach?

On 27 August 2026, Manchester Airports Group (MAG) – the operator of London Stansted, Manchester and East Midlands airports – confirmed a cyber security incident in which an unauthorised third party accessed customer data. Around 8.7 million customers are reported to be affected, making it one of the largest UK data breaches of 2026.

The data involved reportedly includes email addresses, phone numbers, vehicle registrations and postcodes, taken from car parking, lounge, Fast Track bookings and in-airport Wi-Fi sign-ups. MAG has said no bank or payment details were held on the affected system. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has been notified and is assessing the incident.

How do I know if I was affected by the MAG breach?

You may be affected if you used car parking, a lounge, Fast Track, or airport Wi-Fi at Stansted, Manchester or East Midlands airports – or if you received a notification email or letter from Manchester Airports Group about the incident.

Important – beware of scams: because contact details were exposed, criminals may now send fake “data breach” or “claim your compensation” emails and texts. The genuine MAG notification tells you that some of your information (airport parking, lounge, Fast Track or Wi-Fi data) was accessed, confirms that no bank or payment details were involved, and states that MAG will never contact you unexpectedly to ask for payment or banking information. If a message asks for money, passwords or card details, treat it as a scam – and never click links in unexpected messages. If you’re unsure whether you were affected, contact us and we’ll help you check safely.

Can you claim compensation for the MAG data breach?

Under UK GDPR, organisations must keep the personal data they hold secure. Whether you can claim depends on your individual circumstances – a breach happening does not, by itself, guarantee compensation. However, if your data was affected and you have suffered distress, anxiety, financial loss or other harm, you may be entitled to claim – either individually or as part of a group claim alongside other affected customers.

What could you claim for?

  1. Distress and anxiety from the loss of control of your personal data
  2. Financial loss caused by fraud, scams or identity theft following the breach
  3. Loss of privacy and the increased risk of phishing and fraudulent contact
