What is naturalisation?

Naturalisation is the legal process, under the British Nationality Act 1981, by which an adult who was not born British becomes a British citizen. It’s important to know that holding Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or settled status does not make you a citizen automatically — you have to apply separately, meet a specific set of tests, and pay a fee. Once you naturalise, you can apply for a British passport and enjoy the full rights of citizenship.

Who can apply for British citizenship?

Most adults apply by naturalisation. You can usually apply if you:

Are 18 or over and of sound mind

Have lived in the UK for at least 5 years (or 3 years if you're married to, or in a civil partnership with, a British citizen)

Have held ILR or settled status — normally for at least 12 months (this 12-month wait doesn't apply if you're married to a British citizen)

The absence rules for British citizenship

This is one of the most common reasons applications fail, so it’s worth checking carefully. For the standard 5-year route, you must generally not have been outside the UK for:

More than 450 days in the last 5 years
More than 90 days in the last 12 months

If you’re applying on the 3-year route (married to a British citizen), the limit is 270 days over 3 years, and 90 days in the last year. We’ll review your travel history before you apply so absences don’t cause a refusal.

The good character requirement

To naturalise, you must show good character. The Home Office looks at things like criminal convictions, cautions, immigration history, and whether your taxes are in order. Minor issues aren't always a bar, but they must be handled properly — declaring everything and explaining the context. This is an area where good legal advice makes a real difference.

The Life in the UK Test and English requirement

Most applicants must have passed the Life in the UK Test and be able to prove English at CEFR level B1 or higher — unless exempt (for example, on grounds of age or a long-term physical or mental condition). If you already passed the Life in the UK Test for your ILR, you don't need to take it again.

Do I need ILR before applying?

Yes — for the naturalisation route you must already hold Indefinite Leave to Remain or settled status. If you're not there yet, see our ILR (settlement) service. If you came to the UK on a spouse visa and your partner is British, see our spouse and partner visa service — you may be on the 3-year route.

What documents will I need?

Naturalisation is made on Form AN, supported by your passport(s), proof of ILR or settled status, your Life in the UK Test certificate, English language evidence, proof of continuous residence, good character documents, and two referees. Getting this bundle complete and consistent is what prevents delays and refusals.

After your application is approved

Once approved, you’ll be invited to a citizenship ceremony, where you make an oath or affirmation and a pledge. After that, you’re officially a British citizen and can apply for a British passport. The UK permits dual nationality, so you may be able to keep your existing citizenship — though you should check whether your home country allows it.
