What is a UK spouse visa?

A UK spouse visa — officially part of the Family visa (Partner route) under Appendix FM of the Immigration Rules — lets the husband, wife, civil partner or unmarried partner of a British or settled person come to live in the UK. It’s usually granted for an initial period of around 2.5 years, after which you can extend it, and it leads to settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain) after 5 years.

Who can apply for a spouse or partner visa?

To qualify, you and your partner generally need to meet three types of requirement — relationship, sponsor and financial:

Relationship

You must be married, in a civil partnership, or have been living together in a relationship like marriage for at least 2 years. You must both be 18 or over and intend to live together permanently.

Sponsor

Your partner in the UK must be a British or Irish citizen, have settled status / ILR, or hold refugee status or humanitarian protection.

Financial

You must meet the minimum income requirement

The £29,000 income requirement explained

This is the requirement people worry about most. To sponsor a partner, you currently need to show a minimum income of £29,000 a year (raised from £18,600 in April 2024). You can usually meet it through:

Employment income — from your UK-based sponsor (and sometimes the applicant)
Self-employment or company director income
Cash savings — held for a set period, as an alternative or top-up
Certain other sources, including some pensions and non-employment income

The rules on how income is counted are strict and easy to get wrong — a small evidence gap is a common reason for refusal. We check your figures carefully before you apply.

The English language requirement

The person applying will normally need to prove their English language ability — at a basic level for the first visa, rising for later applications. This is usually met with an approved English test, or a degree taught in English, unless you're exempt (for example, nationals of certain English-speaking countries). We'll tell you exactly what applies to you.

What documents will I need?

Every case is different, but most spouse visa applications need evidence of your relationship (photos, messages, joint commitments), your finances (payslips, bank statements, employer letters or savings), your accommodation, and your English language ability. Getting this bundle right is the difference between approval and refusal — and it's where we add the most value.

How long does it take, and how long does the visa last?

Processing times vary depending on where you apply from and whether you pay for a priority service. Once granted, a spouse visa lasts around 2.5 years, after which you apply to extend. After 5 years in total on this route — provided you still meet the rules — you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain, and later for British citizenship.
